Want To Rework Your Set To Make Room For More Scoring Clubs ?

by Terry Koehler on April 29, 2007

Jack asks this question thru the Ask Terry button:

Q:  I have a 46 degree pitching wedge and have been using a 52/8 gap wedge and either a 58/12 or 58/8 sand wedge depending on bunker conditions.

Somehow I think that’s too big a gap. The 58 just seems too lofted from sand, although it’s great as a semi-lob wedge. I think I could ditch a three iron (hybrid) or 4 iron (hybrid) potentially to go to three more wedges… but what do you think ?

A: Jack, you probably would guess I’m a real believer in carrying more scoring clubs, as that is where you will cut strokes off your game.

As for how to make room in your bag, here’s a suggestion.

Take your clubs out to a remote hole on your course some afternoon, and do an experiment.

First, hit enough shots with your 3 and 4 hybrids to get a measurable grouping of each, and then see go down and pace off exactly how far it is between the center of these two patterns.

Then do the same comparison between your 4 hybrid and your 5 iron, then your 5 and 6 irons.

You might find that your gaps are a little smaller than they need to be at the long end of your set. (I recommend at least a 15 yard gap in between these clubs).

If your gaps are less than this, you might try dropping your 4 hybrid, and when you have that length shot, just choke up on your 3 by a half inch to an inch.

For more sophisticated “tweaking”, you can have your clubmaker lengthen your 5-iron by ¼ to ½ inch to add a few yards to its distance.

Hope this helps.
